The Ultimate Geek Date

Robin and I take turns planning "date night". Typically his night consists of dinner and a movie at Studio Movie Grill in Addison which entails minimal planning. However, he does often opt for chick flicks or action movies, knowing good and well that anything Sci-Fi or Fantasy (his favorites) will be vetoed by me. So, in order to make it up to him, I planned the ultimate geek date last night - the Dallas Symphony playing the music of Star Trek. As their web site states, "the Meyerson is transformed into the 'final frontier' as The Dallas Symphony performs soaring themes from this science fiction favorite, under the baton of Erich Kunzel and narrated by special guest John DeLancie as 'Q.'". What a perfect date for Robin!

We arrived in time to enjoy the entertainment in the lobby, featuring countless Star Trek geeks dressed in costume and much memorabilia. We then found our way to the front of the auditorium, where we sat out of place among the costumed fans. Though every guy I ever dated for a significant amount of time enjoyed watching Star Trek (or, at least was into it at some juncture in their life), I, on the other hand, never got into the series. Shows such as Beverly Hill 90210 and Melrose Place were on my television in high school. Before that, you could find me watching any and all game shows in the afternoon. I did venture out into the Sci-Fi realm when I was at home sick with the flu once and it was the Battlestar Galactica marathon. I watched about 5 episodes; clearly the high fevers I was experiencing was affecting my judgement!

Robin seemed to enjoy the performance. I missed most of the jokes from the hosts, as you clearly had to know the series. But, all in all, it was a great date. Now, Robin needs to plan the perfect Dr. Trouble date!
