It was Friday night and I was ready for my 3-day weekend! So, to celebrate, Robin Leach and I decided to go out. At the last minute, we had a change in plans as I found out we were having a house guest for the evening. My uncle was in town, sitting at the bar at Javier's and wanting to meet us out for dinner. He was craving a steak, and wanted to try Perry's Restaurant in Uptown. Robin and I arrived fashionably late, finding him with his friend Trey, a guy that I have know for as long as I remember.
The food was excellent (I might have to rank this over my usual Uptown steak haunt Nick & Sam's), the atmosphere warm and inviting, and the company great. Trey had us all laughing, telling us goofy stories about my family as well as some of his adventures here in Dallas. By this time, the night was young and we were just getting started.
We pondered long and hard about the next stop for the evening, considering places such as the Ghost Bar and Nikita. After much consideration, we opted for Brooklyn on Lamar St. For those of you that remember, this was the jazz club in Oak Cliff that was forced to move secondary to noise complaints. I had been to the old location in the Bishop's Arts District only once, and so was eagerly awaiting the new location.
We arrived to find the place packed, largely due to everyone coming to hear Martha Burks. My goodness she can sing, with a repertoire consisting from Chaka Khan to Ella Fitzgerald. Trey knew the owner, which allowed us to get a table up close. We were joined by a few single ladies, grooving at the table with us. I partook in a Cosmo or two while watching some people I know dance drunkenly on the makeshift dance floor. If you haven't been to Brooklyn and you like jazz, then you should definitely check this place out. We will be going with Ms. Fabulous to a Sunday brunch there soon as she heard it is supposed to be good. Here are some pics at Brooklyn:
Our next stop was supposed to be Obar, but as usual, the night leads us to Sunset Lounge. We find ourselves drinking and enjoying the company of youngsters, but with some powerful concoctions poured by Dallas' best bartender. Trey, trying hard to resist the temptation to smoke, found a whole pack of cigarettes on our table and thus gave into the noxious habit.
My uncle called it a night before all of us, walking back to my condo alone. Robin and I left shortly thereafter, finding ourselves locked out of our own home since someone locked the deadbolt. That is not the situation I like to encounter when I have to urinate badly!!! After numerous loud knocks, he finally opened the door. Overall, it was a great way to start off Labor Day weekend!
